Meeting Project Books and Troubleshooting!

The last week of February was a very eventful week! On Wednesday, the students got to meet their project books that they will be investigating for the second half of the semester. The students used this opportunity to get a preliminary look at the binding structures and the foliations of the manuscript with the guidance of the IPCH Director of Conservation Jiuan Jiuan Chen. She walked the students through the process of using X-ray techniques to investigate and identify the type of sewing employed in some of the manuscripts.

On Friday, the students were introduced to Multiband Imaging (MBI) and generating their own false colour images. They learned to interpret Ultraviolet reflectance, Ultraviolet fluorescence and Infrared reflectance images among others. To view these images and stack them, we spent some time on Friday navigating some logistical challenges (ie software made for windows that is harder to access on Macs) so that the students can analyze the MBI data independently. At the end of the day, everyone was able to install the programs and we walked through some examples to familiarize the students with the capabilities of each of the programs.
